Citrus To the Rescue!

Citrus fruit are a welcome tonic in late winter, when spring fruit still seem far away. Pictured here are Meyer lemons from our backyard tree.

Late winter can be difficult. It’s an in-between time, when we’re starting to long for the end of winter and look forward to spring — yet it’s not here yet. Here in the Santa Cruz mountains, there are no strawberries, blueberries, or even rhubarb yet, but there is more rain, road closures, power outages, even snow of all things! It’s been a tough winter up here.

In times like these, we need citrus. The sweet, tangy tartness of lemons, oranges, tangerines and grapefruit makes my heart glad. The brightness of citrus fruit give me hope that spring will indeed come in time.

In my garden, we have a gorgeous Meyer lemon tree, which has grown and spread over the years and annually yields hundreds of bright Meyer lemons for my kitchen. About five years ago, I developed a recipe for Meyer Lemon Drizzle Loaf Cake, which proved to be a big hit with my neighbors here in Ben Lomond, Felton, and Boulder Creek. When I started Fika Bakeshop two years ago, this cake was one of the first things to go on the menu.

Meyer Lemon Drizzle Loaf Cake

Right now is prime Meyer Lemon Drizzle Loaf Cake time! My tree has tons of lemons on it that are just begging to be transformed into a tasty treat to go with your coffee or tea. You can order them in an 8 1/2” x 4” loaf size or three small loaves that are just perfect for gift-giving.

Let Meyer Lemon Drizzle Loaf Cake brighten your spirits this winter!

xoxo,

— Susan
